Pender County Quality of Life

Pender County was formed in 1875 and named in honor of General William Pender of Edgecombe, a Confederate soldier who was killed at the battle of Gettysburg. It is the fifth largest county in North Carolina, with a land area consisting of 870.76 miles. The county is located in the southeastern coastal plains section of North Carolina approximately 25 minutes north of the port of Wilmington and 25 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean.

Pender is a fast growing county with a population drawing near 50,000. Well positioned for growth, both individually and as a part of the Cape Fear region, the County provides industrial locations adjacent to the Interstate 40 corridor, as well as access to a major port, international airport, and regional medical center. For these reasons, there is an emerging trend from an agricultural toward a light industrial economic base. The completion of I-40 allows major recreation and transportation expansion in the Cape Fear Region causing considerable growth in New Hanover County (Wilmington). New Hanover County is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, and the Cape Fear River on the south and west. Therefore, expansion must occur to the north in Pender County. One major employer, Del Labs, Inc. (Baby Orajel), has located off of the I-40 corridor in Rocky Point since May 1997, and currently employs approximately 1,000 employees. Also, LL Building Products (300 employees), American Greetings (60 employees) Wieland (30 employees), and Cardinal Metal Works (60 employees), have located in the County since 1991. Timber and recreation at the beaches will continue to be major contributors to the County’s economy.

Pender County is host to three industrial parks and two industrial corridors, which are strategically located for new and expanding industry. Cape Fear Community College provides work force training tailored to meet industry demands. There are three rivers in Pender County, which offer recreational fun including boating, camping, canoeing, fishing, swimming and water skiing. Topsail Beach is the main island and is included in the 15 miles of pristine sandy beaches located in Pender Co. Citizens enjoy an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities including Moore’s Creek Battleground , four golf courses and  many local festivals. The county seat is Burgaw . The Wallace Municipal Airport is located two miles south of Wallace and 14 miles north of Burgaw and services local industrial flights. The airport has a 4,000-foot lighted, paved runway and can accommodate any corporate jet. Wilmington International Airport or Jacksonville Airport is strategically located just 15 minutes away for commercial air travel.

Citizens enjoy a relatively temperate climate here, where the average temperature is 62.3 degrees. The average annual rainfall is 53.04 inches. Pender County is home to I-40. Additional connections are 75 minutes to I-95 and 60 minutes to proposed I-74. Primary roads include NC 11, 53, 210, US 17, US 117 and US 421.
